More than 3.9 million Americans submit letter to Interior Secretary Bernhardt

January 2, 2020

Ninety-one conservation, sportsmen, and faith-based groups concerned with public lands management submitted a letter to Interior Secretary Bernhardt calling for William Perry Pendley to resign or be removed from office. Pendley is the temporary Deputy Director of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

The letter cites Pendley’s direction to implement the agenda of public lands extremist groups; his conflicts of interest—his former law firm represents the opponents of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments designations; moving BLM headquarters personnel from Washington to western offices without congressional authorization; and skewed leadership toward extractive industry.

“Putting Pendley in charge of the BLM is like the fox guarding the henhouse,” said Guardians’ Judi Brawer. “He will destroy the agency and the irreplaceable public lands in his charge.”
