Lobos are on the agenda this Friday, April 19th, when the New Mexico Game Commission meets. We need a chorus of pro-wildlife New Mexicans to tell Game Commissioners to take action to save this native species.
You can attend in person or give public testimony virtually for lobo recovery.
The meeting will take place at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center (3031 US-180 Silver City) at 8:30 a.m. Mexican wolves are the sixth item on the agenda.
Here are some talking points, but feel free to use your own:
- To save lobos from a genetic crisis, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish should stop blocking the releases of well-bonded family packs of wolves from captivity into the wild.
- Lobos should be allowed to roam and establish in suitable habitat north of Interstate 40. New Mexico is on record supporting this unscientific boundary, instead of allowing lobos to disperse, which leading scientists have called for.
- Mexican wolves are native to these ecosystems and are a keystone species. Their full recovery is necessary for ecological resilience and biodiversity. They belong!
