Vote comes despite public opposition, environmental impacts

December 9, 2019

Despite opposition from the public, traditional communities, conservation groups, and Cochiti Pueblo, Councilor Peter Ives unexpectedly urged approval of a controversial pipeline project last Wednesday at the Santa Fe City Council Public Utilities Committee meeting.

The proposed wastewater pipeline is being planned with little consideration of impacts on downstream landowners, wetlands, and wildlife. The project would not result in any more physical water for the city of Santa Fe, but would remove half or more of the water in the Santa Fe River.

Guardians and allies are urging the city to act responsibly and postpone any votes on the pipeline.
