Premiere of No Fools Gold film in Albuquerque this weekend
In late summer of 2020, Summa Silver Corporation, an international mining company, announced plans to begin exploratory drilling in the region of southwest New Mexico. Shortly thereafter, residents reached out to environmental advocacy organizations seeking support in opposing the mine and the threats it posed to important watersheds, the local economy, and native wildlife, including the threatened Mexican spotted owl and Gila trout.
Less than a year later, filmmaker Claire Haughey, with support from WildEarth Guardians, spent a week filming in Mogollon in order to document the fierce local love of place, and the community’s steadfast commitment to protecting their wild, four-legged, feathered, and finned neighbors and their habitat. The culmination of Haughey’s project is Guardians of the Greater Gila: No Fools Gold, a 20 minute micro-documentary telling the fascinating story of this place and the people who fight for its protection.
Watch No Fools Gold this weekend at 1pm at the Guild Cinema in Albuquerque, NM. More information can be found here.
