Ditch project blocks fish passage

Today we challenged the Colorado Water Conservation Board to carefully scrutinize a new project on the Rio Grande that would take a toll on native fish.

The Colorado Rio Grande Restoration Foundation’s proposed Five Ditches Project aims to remove and replace old ditches and headgates in Colorado. One arm of the project, the Consolidated and Pace Ditch diversion, features a preliminary concrete design that would span bank to bank, preventing native fish from traveling both directions on the river.

Imperiled native fish like the Rio Grande chub rely on unfragmented stretches of river to survive. We will keep fighting to hold the Foundation accountable in light of plans that promise harm to the river and its wildlife.
