Petition Of Governor Bill Richardson For State Specific Rulemaking To Protect Roadless Areas In New Mexico

The state of New Mexico has determined that prohibiting new road construction and most forms of commercial timber harvest is in the best interest of current and future generations of New Mexico citizens

The state of New Mexico strongly believes that the existing inventoried roadless areas and the Valle Vidal should remain roadless for the many social and ecological values that they possess. The 1.6 million acres of inventoried roadless areas constitute about 17 percent of all the National Forest land in New Mexico. Among other benefits, the data clearly shows that the inventoried roadless areas in New Mexico provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife, protect public drinking water sources, provide unique recreation opportunities (e.g., hunting, fishing, hiking), and preserve traditional cultural properties and sacred sites.
