Santa Fe, NM – The critically-acclaimed, award-winning documentary ELEMENTAL: REIMAGINE WILDFIRE will premiere in Santa Fe on June 21, 2023 at the Lensic Performing Arts Center.  The screening will be followed by a Q&A with experts, including retired Deputy Chief of the US Forest Service, Jim Furnish; Porfirio Chavarria of the Santa Fe Fire Department; and Madeleine Carey, Greater Gila Guardian at WildEarth Guardians. Santa Fe County Commissioner Anna Hamilton will moderate the question and answer session.

Doors open at 6:00 PM with the film starting at 6:30, followed by Q&A.

Narrated by David Oyelowo and directed by Tripp Jennings of Balanced Media, ELEMENTAL: REIMAGINE WILDFIRE (84 min) takes viewers on a journey across the nation with the top experts to better understand fire. The film starts with the harrowing escape from Paradise, California as the town ignited from wind-driven embers and burned within a few hours of the fire’s start. The film then travels across the American  West to record-shattering fires throughout the region. With the voices of climate experts, Indigenous people and fire survivors at the forefront, the film asks viewers to reimagine wildfire as we prepare for an increasingly hotter future.

Elemental does an excellent job of explaining our current wildfire problems and the solutions most likely to help us protect our homes, communities, and public lands moving forward,” said Tom Boatner, retired Bureau of Land Management Chief of Fire Operations and smokejumper. ”Built on a solid foundation of science and fact, the film explores our options in an era of extended drought and increasing wildfire size and intensity.”

Andrew Rothman, Wild Places Program Director at WildEarth Guardians, said, “Wildfire is dangerous and scary, but it is a natural regenerating part of our ecosystems in the west. Elemental does a great job of conveying the science and story of wildfires in a changing climate. While the agencies are pushing an assault on our forests, the film questions the assumption that we can log our way to saving communities and infrastructure from wildfire.”

The film dares to ask: how can we live –  and thrive – with wildfire, even as towns are burned off the map? This film shares a vision where reimagining our relationship with the powerful element of wildfire allows us to coexist with fire. Informed by Indigenous fire experts and scientific research,  ELEMENTAL: REIMAGINE WILDFIRE calls into question our entire approach to wildfire and charts a new path forward for a hotter, drier world.
