Guardians and allies including three local landowners have filed suit to defend Montana from oil and gas drilling and fracking. The suit challenges Montana’s decision to approve nearly 150,000 acres of oil and gas leases in the state.
We’re arguing that the Bureau of Land Management failed to do its homework when it came to approving the leases, ignoring the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions that will stem from the fracking, and hiding key calculations from decision-makers and the public.
Two lease sales are at issue in this case: a December 2017 sale, in which the BLM sold nearly 100,000 acres in Montana’s iconic Tongue River Valley; and a March 2018 sale, in which the BLM offered up nearly 50,000 acres near Livingston, Montana, the Beartooth Front, and directly next to the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument.
