On Friday April 21, 2017, WildEarth Guardians filed a Notice of Appeal challenging the legal validity of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s “Monument Butte” oil and project.
The Monument Butte project would devastate more than 100,000 acres of our public lands in northeastern Utah. It would be a complete climate disaster, producing the equivalent of 29 coal-fired power plants worth of greenhouse gas emissions.
This region of Utah has been pretty hammered by the oil and gas industry, but it’s certainly not a lost cause. Located at the foot of the Uinta Mountains, the Monument Butte area is part of the Greater Dinosaur region, an area surrounding the iconic Dinosaur National Monument.
Now, under Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, the Bureau of Land Management wants to press ahead with drilling and fracking nearly 6,000 new oil and gas wells in an area larger than the City of Denver.
Our Notice of Appeal opens the door for us to put the brakes on this massive oil and gas project, to keep fossil fuels in the ground, and defend our public lands from ongoing Trump giveaways of our public lands. See for yourself what’s at stake in the Monument Butte area, check our our pictures.
