Canva Team Guidelines

Keep it clean. Copy from templates. Make life easier for others. Make life easier for yourself.

Contact Samantha Bruegger to obtain log-in credentials if you do not have them already

And watch this tutorial with some basic pointers on how to work with our templates.

Before designing in Canva, make your own folder

  • Only for your and your teams work
  • Canva is best organized by your own work in your own folder, designs as a team get messy really fast
  •  Keep workspace organized for others by organizing your stuff

Make a copy of the master template or design, do not adjust

  • Click on “view only” and make a copy or just make a copy
  • Save that copy to your work folder, then begin work

Finding and Naming Images

  • Don’t use copyrighted images.
  • Flickr is a great resource and make sure you have checked “Commercial Use and Modifications allowed”
  • Use the images in Canva from search, we have the rights to use them from our Non-profit
  • Google Image Search – select “Tools” then “Usage Rights” then “for reuse and modifications”
  • Download the highest resolution image you can, save photo and rename according to these guidelines
    • Do not use 52w309u.jpg
    • Rename with hyphens between words
    • Always include photo credit at the end
    • Include the geography-species (or subject matter)
      • Example: Say image 52w309u.jpg is of a Grizz with cubs in snow by the BLM.
      • Naming becomes: Grizzly-snow-cubs-WildEarth-Guardians-credit-BLM

Design

  • Simple is better, focus on the one thing you want someone to know. There is supporting copy on Facebook Events pages or Virtual Events pages.
  • Size type to fill black bars. Top should be attention getting, short and bold.
  • Center type in bars
  • Focus in on the attention grabbing aspect of photo, close or far, no middle zone
  • Don’t change fonts
  • Use Guardians logo with no tag line on email and social media, follow templates
  • Don’t change colors of the black bars on posts or events. Black with white type is simple, powerful and will stand out on social media.

Save

  • Save your work to your Canva folder before you publish

Publish and Share

  • Publish work as PNG (not JPG), always choose optimize
  • Rename the file to ensure it follows naming guidelines including photo credits

Archive Original Stock Images

Put original image you sourced from Flickr into the correct folder in the Dropbox Photo Library
