SEO – Blog post text

Focus keyword: What are people searching for? Can be a word or phrase. For instance, in a news post about fracking Chaco, the focus keyword might be “end Chaco fracking.”

  • Put the focus keyword in the body of the text, in the slug, and in the meta description if possible, but don’t force it.

 

Snippet: What people see in a search engine (like Google). Comprised of:

SEO title

Post URL

Meta description

 

SEO title should be [post title] | Brave New Wild | WildEarth Guardians (very important to get Guardians’ name in there!)

Slug should be post title/focus keyword

Meta description: A paragraph that describes the piece for people who are searching for it. Google will automatically scrape the first paragraph from the text if you don’t set the meta description, and the first paragraph is not always best.

Images: Put the post title in the “alt text” for the featured image.

SEO – Blog/action center images

Photo name: Photos (such as an image downloaded from IStock) should be named with hyphens and should have the subject matter, geography if applicable, Wildearth Guardians name and the credit to photographer if known.

Example: black-bear-yellowstone-WildEarth-Guardians-amy-smith

Alt and title fields: In the alt and title fields in WordPress the same words should appear, but no hyphen should be included.

Example: black bear yellowstone WildEarth Guardians amy smith

SEO – External links and linking best practices

If another site is referenced, such as www.washingtonpost.com, or a pdf, or our own photo library, use the option to open the link in a new window (tab). Always keep people on the Guardians site for as long as possible. 

Please do not use “Click here to see a list of species that Guardians work to protect.” That link is what Google knows as anchor text, and it is very valuable for SEO. The word “here” means nothing to Google. Instead, reword the sentence to have the clickable anchor, like this: See a list of endangered species that Guardians works to protect.” That anchor text has a very valuable keyword phrase that is now very visible to Google.
