500,000 comments submitted today

September 24, 2018

A broad coalition including Guardians submitted 500,000 public comments opposing proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act today, bringing the total number of public comments opposing the changes to more than 800,000 (greater than the entire population of Seattle).

The Trump administration proposed changes to the Act earlier this year that would be disastrous to listed species—including getting rid of the protections that keep “threatened” species from being killed and harassed; preventing species whose habitat is threatened by climate change from having protected habitat designated under the Act; and considering economic impacts when deciding whether to list a species.

“These attacks on the Endangered Species Act do not reflect the will of the American people, who overwhelmingly support this wildly successful law,” said Guardians’ Taylor Jones. “Instead of rollbacks in the guise of ‘reform,’ cementing a legacy of extinction, the administration should be fully funding the implementation of the Endangered Species Act and the recovery of imperiled species.”
