Zinke backs down after challenge from Tribes and allies

Finally, news worth celebrating when it comes to Greater Chaco. The upcoming sale of more than 4,400 acres in this sacred region has been CANCELED!

Interior Secretary Zinke announced the sale’s cancellation on March 1, 2018. The lease sale was originally scheduled for March 8.

There’s still plenty of work to do in Greater Chaco, an irreplaceable landscape home to Navajo and sacred to many Tribes. But the cancellation of the lease sale offers hope that the Indigenous communities tied to Greater Chaco—who called for a moratorium on fracking there last year—are finally being heard.
