On April 23, we called on the Trump administration to back down from yet another fracking auction. The auction targets lands for fracking located next to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeastern New Mexico, with the closest parcel less than a mile from the park’s boundary.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is proposing to auction off nearly 71,000 acres of public lands at its September 2018 lease sale. Approximately 19,000 acres of those 71,000 are located within 10 miles of the national park.
Fracking so close to Carlsbad Caverns National Park endangers its fragile geology and air quality, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the park annually.
