Guardians and allies jointly released a report, “Drilling Toward Disaster: New Mexico’s Oil & Gas Boom Undermines the State’s Climate Goals,” on February 13. The report finds that New Mexico’s projected oil and gas production is entirely out of sync with the action necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change.
Continued expansion of oil and gas will completely undermine New Mexico’s goals of reducing emissions, the report notes. Oil and gas production has grown 125 percent since 2010 and is positioned to increase more than 85 percent by 2030 unless this course is corrected. Projected emissions from this increase could amount to 10 times’ Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s stated climate goals.
